Oak Street Beach was lit up Friday night to mark the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Volunteers placed 3,000 glowing luminarios along the water as part of the "Light up the Lakefront" memorial tribute to victims of domestic violence.

The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence says about 300,000 women and children experience violence in their homes each year.

There have been 54 fatalities related to domestic violence since January 2009.
