Doctors' communication style may influence weight loss

October 6, 2010

A new study finds patients are much more likely to lose weight if their doctor talked about diet and weight loss in a motivational way rather than in a judgmental or confrontational manner.

Researchers say, patients don't like to be told what to do, but when doctors used a more motivational or empathic approach the patient becomes more of an equal partner in care.

This study appears in the current issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
