Feds propose new rules for medical helicopters

October 7, 2010 (CHICAGO)

2008 was the deadliest year on record for medical helicopters. There were 24 deaths in six accidents, including four people in a crash in aurora.

From the 1990's through last year, more than 200 people died in commercial or medical chopper accidents.

The proposals include equipping helicopters with an electronic system to warn pilots of terrain or other obstacles.

The medical copter went down in Aurora after hitting a radio tower.

The rules could go into effect early next year.
