October 8, 2010 (CHICAGO) --
A ceremony was held in honor of 21 firefighters killed in the stockyards fire 100 years ago. The actual anniversary is not until December 22, but the firefighters union wanted the ceremony at the Stockyard Fire Memorial site at Peoria and Exchange to coincide with fire safety week.
A plaque explaining what happened that day in 1910 was also unveiled. The Stockyard Fire was the largest loss of firefighters' lives prior to 9-11.
The name of Chris Wheatley, a Chicago firefighter who died in the line of duty, was also added to the memorial wall Friday.
