Winfield council approves sheriff protection again

October 11, 2010 (WINFIELD, Ind.)

The agreement passed at the Winfield City Council meeting unanimously Monday morning.

''We want to reassure the community of Winfield that they are safe and secure. Our community has always been safe, although there was a misunderstanding between Winfield and the county," said Councilwoman Paulette Skinner.

Skinner declined to give specifics on the agreement the council reached with the county, but said there will be more sheriff's patrols and a greater monitoring of Winfield ordinances.

The Lake County Board will vote on the measure Tuesday morning, at which point the full agreement should be released.

Two weeks ago, Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez pulled patrols from Winfield after the town didn't meet a deadline to pay $100,000 for police protection at which time only emergency calls would be answered.

On October 6, the Winfield town council voted not to pay the funds.
