Workers to remove corroded steel from Thompson Center

Contractors will begin removing the corroded structural steel that supports the Thompson Center Monday night.

The almost $300,000 project will also remove protective scaffolding around the building. It's expected to take two weeks.

Meanwhile, funding has stalled for the rebuilding of the center's arcade.

In August 2009, a hunk of granite fell off the facade and crashed onto the Clark Street sidewalk. No one was injured, but an emergency analysis revealed that other pieces of granite were also unstable.
