Thompson Center steelwork begins

Contractors Tuesday morning started removing the corroded structural steel that supports the Thompson Center.

The nearly-$300,000 project will also remove protective scaffolding around the building.

Work is expected to take two weeks.

Meanwhile, funding has stalled for the rebuilding of the center's arcade.

A hunk of granite fell off the facade and crashed onto the Clark Street sidewalk in August 2009. No one was hurt, but analysis revealed that other pieces of granite were unstable as well.
