Wrigleyville bomb suspect pleads not guilty

October 20, 2010 (NEW YORK)

Sami Samir Hassoun is charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and of an explosive device. He is accused of plotting to set off a bomb outside a North Side bar.

Hassoun allegedly placed a backpack containing a fake bomb in a garbage can last month.

His attorney says his client is not a terrorist. Defense attorney Myron Auerbach has said that the actions ascribed to Hassoun, if true, were strange and uncharacteristic.

Prosecutors have said Hassoun has no apparent links to extremists and that he appeared motivated in part by thinking he could profit from bombings.
