Demonstrators support Buffalo Grove HS play

October 23, 2010 (BUFFALO GROVE) Outside the northwest suburban high school tonight, members of Westboro Baptist Church were a no-show.

Instead, people demonstrated in support of Buffalo Grove High School's production of "The Laramie Project."

The play is based on the death of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was tortured and murdered in Wyoming in 1998.

"Tolerance and acceptance of people for the sake of their very humanity trumps any type of fear-based hatred that they could possibly promote," said protestor Alyssa Cartman.

"I know that the subject matter - it's very tough, but I applaud Buffalo Grove High School for taking it on. It's an important message," said protestor Dave Feinstein.

Westboro Baptist Church has received attention for its protests at the funerals of American military service members.
