President: Notre Dame failed to protect junior

The president of the University of Notre Dame said the school failed to protect a student who died while videotaping football practice.

Declan Sullivan, 20, was from suburban Long Grove. He was killed last month when the hydraulic life he was on fell over during strong gusts winds.

In an e-mail to students, faculty, staff and alumni, the Reverend John Jenkins said words cannot express the school's sorrow to the Sullivan family. He said Notre Dame and he, as president, are responsible for Sullivan's death.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
