Watchdog group asks state to rein in pensions

November 9, 2010 (CHICAGO)

National Taxpayers United of Illinois presented a report Tuesday on state pension payments. It found that more than 4,000 retired state government workers received more than $100,000 in pension benefits for the past fiscal year.

"The number of retired government employees receiving more than $100,00 in pension benefits a year increased by 20-percent in a single year. These pension millionaires are draining the state's pension fund," said Jim Tobin, National Taxpayers United of Illinois.

The group says pension reform would make a proposed state income tax increase unnecessary.
