He and officers under his command have been accused of torturing suspects in police custody.
Prosecutors say the long prison sentence is warranted because Burge left a stain on the Chicago Police Department and cost taxpayers millions of dollars in settlement costs.The probation office recently recommended a 15-to-21 month sentence for Burge. He will be sentenced in January.
