The funeral for Lance Corporal James Bray Stack took place Saturday morning at Prospect High School in Prospect Heights.
Stack died in combat while serving in Afghanistan. The 20-year old was from northwest suburban Arlington Heights.
Stack's father read part of a letter he received from his son one day before learning of his death. He called it the "most precious communication" he could ever hope to have from his son.
"I'm so lucky to have a great dad like you. Thank you for all the opportunities you gave me. I feel like I'm your son and also a friend. In my eyes, you are my role model," the father read.
Stack is survived by his parents, a sister, wife, Katie, and 1-year-old daughter, Mikayla.
