Persistent cough may be sign of something serious

That cold weather cough that doesn't seem to want to go away could be the first sign of more serious illness.

British pharmacists say they've been asked to pick out people with persistent problems and encourage them to see their physician.

At this time of year, millions of people develop chest problems, many caused by infections which will clear up in days or weeks.

But, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain says a long lasting cough can also be a sign of cancer or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The earlier you're diagnosed with a lung condition, the better your chance of being treated successfully.
