A new study finds children and teens who are overexposed to some antibacterial soaps may be at increased risk for hay fever and other allergies.

The chemical in question is called triclosan.

The study in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives also found exposure to higher levels of BPA may weaken an adult's immune system.

Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent widely used in soaps, toothpaste, medical devices and diaper bags.

BPA is used to make many types of plastics and other consumer products.
