Obesity may cause osteoporosis

Doctors have long thought obesity protected women from osteoporosis. But new research challenges the conventional wisdom.

Researchers studied 50 premenopausal women and found a connection between excess belly fat and low bone density.

There's now concern that extra weight around the middle not only increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes, it may also cause osteoporosis.

This study was presented to the Radiological Society of North America.
