Pilot killed in downstate plane crash

One person was killed when a small plane crashed Thursday afternoon near Decatur Airport in downstate Illinois.

The FAA said the homebuilt Freebird Lite Sport took off from Runway 18 at the airport and crashed just a mile and a half away. Only the pilot was on board. He was killed. His name has not been released.

The aircraft was destroyed.

The FAA is investigating the crash.

Decatur is 40 miles east of Springfield.
