Investigators were back at a former dog rescue facility Thursday to recover at least 17 dead animals and search for others. They put on masks and white protective suits before entering Muddy Paws Dog Rescue in north suburban Deer Park.

Earlier this month, police arrested the owner, Diane Eldrup. Authorities found more than a dozen dead dogs inside the former business. At the time, Eldrup was charged with four counts of animal cruelty and torture. Additional counts were filed this week.

Investigators say some of the dead dogs were found curled next to empty food bowls.
