The fire was confined to the sixth-floor apartment where it started, officials said. One man was rescued from that apartment and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. Two other people received minor injuries; one was treated at the scene and the other was in fair condition.
An EMS Plan 1 was called, but no evacuations were necessary. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Fire crews were able to put the blaze out within an hour. Crowds gathered to watch them work.
