Ryan called his attorney Jim Thompson as Thompson was discussing the latest development with ABC7 News.
Ryan's legal team had hoped he'd be granted bail while they worked on his appeal so he could spend more time with his terminally ill wife, Lura Lynn. But Monday's ruling says Ryan has not met standards that allow for his release.
"He's sort of at the end of his rope, but he has to hang on to get home to see his wife before she dies it's as simple as that," Thompson told ABC7.
Thompson is trying other avenues to get Ryan out of prison. They include petitioning President Obama for clemency.
