2 charged in hit-and-run that injured trooper

Trooper Hornsby was struck by a vehicle at I-90 at the 51 mile marker near LaPorte State Road 39 exit around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 10. David King, 19, of Gary, Ind., faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, resisting law enforcement and possession of a stolen automobile. Michael L. Maldonado, 18, of East Chicago, Ind., faces a charge of possession of stolen automobile.

According to Indiana State Police, the car was first spotted near the 42 mile marker as the driver began to pull over before speeding off. Trooper Hornsby, 30, was attempting to throw his stop sticks onto I-90 near the 51 mile marker as the car approached when the vehicle swerved toward him, striking him.

The driver fled the scene, exiting off onto Willowcreek Road in Portage. The car- a 2003 Toyota Camry- was found on January 12 nearby.

Hornsby had to have surgery on his left leg.
