City Council calls on fed gov't to halt deportations

January 13, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Hispanic activists joined aldermen in slamming the Obama administration's performance on this issue. They say deportations now total 1,100, which they say is double the rate under the Bush administration. They want President Obama to immediately halt deportations of undocumented workers if those people have a family member who is a citizen or if they have a child born in this country.

"It is just unfathomable that the federal government persists in this cruel and unusual punishment to innocent members of our society," said Alderman Ald. Ed Burke, 14th Ward.

Alderman Burke represents a majority Hispanic ward.
