Police say Genio Carpenter, 23, of Vallejo, Calif., was charged with one felony count of possession of cannabis. Officers began investigating suspicious activity in the 200-block of South Canal Street Monday and eventually found two suitcases that smelled of marijuana. Each suitcase contained about 19 pounds of pot, police said. Carpenter was taken into custody.

In another, unrelated case, the Narcotics Unit seized 35 pounds of marijuana after following a report of suspicious freight at a warehouse in the 3000-block of West 36th Street. Detectives with a police dog discovered 35 pounds of cannabis, officials said, valued at more than $251,000. They also found 648 grams of heroin with a street value of more than $64,000.
