ComEd customers complain about 'balloon bills'

Some ComEd customers are complaining after receiving so-called balloon bills. That happens when ComEd employees can't get access to a customer's meter.

The utility is allowed to issue an estimated bill. Once ComEd workers finally get an accurate reading, customers sometimes discover they've been underpaying. That's when they receive a balloon bill for the difference.

Crain's Chicago Business reports that ComEd plans to hire more meter readers to help the situation.
