Quinn commends state's response to storm

February 4, 2011 (CHICAGO)

When the blizzard hit, the governor activated 500 members of the Illinois National Guard to help stranded drivers.

They were stationed at rest areas on expressways throughout the state.

On Friday, Quinn thanked the guardsmen and women for their hard work during the storm.

"Whether they're serving in Iraq or Afghanistan or right now in Egypt, making sure that people are safe," Quinn said.

State officials say more than 4,000 drivers were helped during the blizzard.
