Man accused of killing daughter in court

February 7, 2011 (CHICAGO)

A preliminary hearing for Richard Lyons was supposed to take place at noon. But prosecutors asked for a continuance.

Back in 2008, Lyons told police he found his daughter Mya stabbed in an alley near his South Side home.

Investigators said they found evidence disputing those claims, and they charged Lyons with murder.

Mya's aunt said she never knew Richard to be violent and she can't understand why he would have allegedly killed his daughter.

"We'll probably never get the why," said Nicole Barnes, Mya's aunt. "We here today for justice for Mya, She deserved it. And we'll be here every court date for justice."

Lyons is charged in a separate case with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. He's due back in court February 17.
