Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios says this change may cause confusion. That's why he's sending out exemption applications to 300,000 seniors this week. Berrios is worried the applications may be mistaken for junk mail.
"It's imperative that we get the word out. It's important that we reach out to all the seniors so that they know that this is a very, very important document and we will be stressing it throughout the next month," said Berrios.
Berrios says he plans to urge lawmakers in Springfield to cut the annual application requirement.
The filled out property-tax exemption forms must be sent back by March 3.
