Study: Eczema may precede food allergies

February 10, 2011

A new study finds it may actually precede the onset of food allergies rather than be the product of existing allergies.

Scientists with the American Academy of Dermatology found that 15 percent of children with atopic dermatitis had food allergies. Children with the most severe disease had a greater risk for developing allergies.

Researchers say it's important for parents of infants and small children affected by this skin condition to be aware of the risk of food allergies and to be on the lookout for signs.
