Wilmette officials vote down new cell tower

February 14, 2011 (WILMETTE)

The park district board was considering a proposal to erect the tower at the Centennial Park Recreation Complex at Old Glenview Road.

It would have generated $3,000 per month and helped offset operating expenses for the park district, but residents argued against the tower because, they say, it would be an eye sore, and they were concerned about the radiation coming from the structure.

"We appreciate the fact that the commissioners listened to the residents," said Ellen Kaufman, who was opposed to the cell tower.

The board invited an AT&T representative to attend tonight's meeting, but no one showed.
