Demand for cheap beef cuts increases rates

Prices for less expensive cuts of beef are on the rise.

Budget-conscious consumers who have been buying select-grade beef including ground chuck and ground round have driven up the cost.

Government data shows that for the first time in almost two years, select beef prices have topped prices for higher quality choice-grade beef including sirloin and tenderloin.

Supplies of select-grade beef have declined, while demand for it has grown.
