1 man killed, 2 women hurt in NW Side fire

February 23, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The flames broke out in a bungalow in the 3100-block of North Kilbourn around 4:30 a.m. The deceased victim was identified as a man in his 60s.

Two elderly women were rescued from the home. They are being treated at area hospitals. There was no word on what caused the fire.

The fire was extinguished nearly an hour after it began.

Officials said the blaze was confined to the 1.5-story bungalow's back porch, kitchen and attic.

Unconfirmed dispatch reports indicated the fire caused a still-and-box alarm and an EMS Plan 1, which automatically sends five ambulances to the scene, to be enacted.

Several street closures were in effect while crews continued cleanup. Belmont and Barry were shut down temporarily between Kolmar and Kenneth.
