City to test new type of bike lane

February 28, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Unlike current bike lanes that separate bikes from vehicular traffic with paint stripes on the pavement, the new lanes have a barrier or planter box between cars and bikes.

The Chicago Tribune reports a section of Stony Island Avenue between 69th and 77th was selected for the experiment. It's being paid for with a $3 million federal grant.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2014.
