On Sunday, he was at the University of Illinois at Chicago to discuss something called the "American Opportunity Tax Credit."
Durbin says more families with college students need to take advantage of it.
It allows families to receive a tax credit of up to $2,500 per student on their 2009 and 2010 tax returns.
However, only 38 percent of eligible families in Illinois claimed the tuition tax credit last year.
The credit was recently extended for two more years.
