Ill. legislators want Poland to join Visa Waiver Program

March 7, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Senator Mark Kirk announced the proposal Monday at a celebration of Casimir Pulaski Day at the Polish Museum of America.

Kirk and Illinois congressmen Mike Quigley and Dan Lipinski have introduced legislation that would let Poland join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.

"This is the right thing to do," Kirk said, "because now, Poles visiting the United States, less than 3 percent overstay their visa. If you look at a map of Western Europe, you'll see nearly every country already enters the United States visa-free. So should Poland."

Senator Kirk says the legislation should help the economy in the Chicago area because the city has a large Polish population.
