The Daily Herald reports that the Elgin Area District U-46 board approved the layoffs Monday as the district faces a $40 million deficit. Other layoffs include educational support workers and an administrator.
Last month the district approved more than 130 layoffs. Last year the district laid off about 400 workers.
The newspaper reports that next school year general middle and high school classes will increase from 30 to 33 students per teacher.
Administrators say the action was necessary to meet state deadlines and comply with contractual agreements. Officials say some employees could be recalled when next year's funding levels are known.
