Researchers at the University of Michigan recruited 40 people who experienced a breakup within the last six months.
Each participant revealed that thinking about their breakup made them feel rejected.
By analyzing their brain activity, researchers found looking at a photo of an ex caused the same physical pain similar to holding a hot cup of coffee.
The findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
