Kirk: Allied forces should arm Libyan rebels

April 2, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The Republican senator toured an Illinois National Guard facility in Springfield Friday and said arming the insurgents would end the war more quickly and limit costs for the United States.

Specifically, Kirk wants to send anti-tank munitions.

NATO, which is running the allied operation, has barred arming the rebels, and the Secretary of Defense says it is unlikely the U.S. will provide arms.

Kirk also says the rebels should be recognized as legitimate representatives of Libya's people.
