Family spreads word about need for organ donations

April 15, 2011

A Texas family is trying to raise awareness by getting their story told. It involves the death of their 13-year-old daughter, Taylor, and the woman who received her heart.

Taylor Storch's life came to a tragic end in a ski accident. Her parents Tara And Todd made the decision to donate Taylor's organs. Five different people's lives were affected by their generous gift.

One of the recipients was 40-year-old Patricia Winters.

"I felt like I wasn't going to last very long," said Patricia.

She received Taylor's heart. Patricia and her friends went on the internet and eventually figured out who the donor was.

"Knowing she was 13, I mean, that within itself was hard," Patricia said. "But seeing Taylor's picture, it just gave me that sinking feeling even more."

Patricia contacted the Storch family. They flew to her home in Arizona to meet her. It was there that Tara Storch heard her daughter's beating heart.

Todd Storch appeared on ABC7 News at 4 p.m. to talk to Healthbeat Reporter Sylvia Perez about his family's story. Watch the above video to listen to their conversation.
