With the pending return of warmer weather -- hopefully -- many people start thinking about getting in shape. If you've recently taken up running or are considering it, there are some simple steps to help keep you going strong and injury free.

Sports medicine experts say it's best to start gradually and slowly increase intensity, duration and frequency.

Flexibility is also important.

There is some debate about how much warm up is necessary. Some doctors still recommend stretching the calf muscles along with hamstring, quadriceps and upper legs.

And any injury that does last more than seven days or gets worse should be evaluated by a healthcare specialist.
