Southeast Side steel plant turned into storage facility

April 20, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Construction is about 70 percent complete on a new storage facility being built there by Asphalt Operating Services. The historic location of the steel plant on East 106th Street had been unused for more than 30 years.

"When Wisconsin Steel was created about 1902, there had already been a steel plant on this property since 1875. For more than 100 years the community has made Chicago one of the world's greatest iron and steel producers," said Daley.

The construction on the new facility has created 100 temporary jobs. There will be about 45 new permanent positions there.
