Seniors aged 65 or older who earn too much will pay half fares, the same policy as before then-governor Rod Blagojevich pushed through free rides for all seniors three years ago.
The Regional Transportation Authority says Metra, CTA, and Pace should collect more than $30 million a year from the half fares.
Individuals who earn less than about $27,000 a year and couples earning less than about $36,000 may still ride free.
Seniors must register with the Illinois Department of Aging to qualify.
