1 hurt after stray bullets fired along I-90

April 23, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The bullets hit several Illinois homes and injured a Wisconsin woman.

The incident happened on a stretch of I-90 just north of Rockford and across the Wisconsin border. Police in Janesville, Wis. say bullets went through the walls of three apartments that face I-90.

No one was hurt in those homes, but in a separate incident, a Wisconsin woman is recovering from a gunshot wound to the hip. Police believe it could be related to a rash of recent shootings along the interstate.

"In my career, I've never had a call of this nature, nor am I aware of this ever occurring," one unidentified law enforcement officer said.

"I just assumed it was a paintball gun. I was like, 'This neighborhood is not that bad,'" said an area resident.

Authorities from Illinois and Wisconsin say they are working together on the case.
