Study: No long-term effects for babies given anesthesia

April 27, 2011

Previous studies in young animals suggested anesthetics can cause developmental and behavioral problems.

Whether the same was true in humans had been unclear.

Now a study in the journal Anesthesiology finds that a single anesthetic does not seem to harm the brain.

Researchers looked at two different groups of 9th graders. The conclusion: Those who had surgery and anesthesia when they were babies did fine academically compared to children who never had anesthesia.
