Woman, 27, fatally struck by bus in Streeterville

May 4, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The bus hit 27-year-old Justyna Palka at Illinois and Columbus Drive. The driver stopped and no citations have been issued against the driver.

Palka apparently had the right of way when she was struck by the tour bus around 7 p.m. Tuesday, a source said. The driver told investigators he heard a bump, which he thought was a curb, but then stopped the bus, got out and discovered the woman after he heard a second bump, the source said.

There were witnesses to the crash, a source said, but it was not immediately known if anyone was inside the tour bus during the incident.

The woman was initially taken to Northwestern in critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.

Palka, of 480 N. McClurg Ct., was pronounced dead at 7:04 p.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.

The bus driver was also taken to Northwestern hospital with unidentified injuries, Near North District police Capt. Jerome Fluder said.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Wednesday.
