Police: Money problems may have driven 'honeybee killer'

May 10, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Police have found severe financial problems may have driven 48-year-old Gary Amaya to embark on a deadly robbery spree back in October.

Over the course of three months Amaya shot three people, one fatally, along the Illinois-Indiana state line. He was dubbed the honeybee killer because he asked a Lowell farmer about bees before shooting him.

The Chicago Tribune reports that newly released documents show Amaya had unpaid bills, his home was in disrepair, and he had sold most the guns he owned.

In December, Amaya was killed by a customer while trying to rob an Orland Park tanning salon.
