Northwestern gospel choir celebrates 40 years

May 13, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Many Northwestern alumni will be in Evanston for this occasion. The alumni choir will host the concert and the current NCE choir will be the special guest.

The Northwestern Community Ensemble was formed in 1971 and served many purposes for the few black students attending Northwestern University. In the beginning, the choir had to raise money and fund its activities, but now their activities are sponsored by the University. The choir has gone through changes including its makeup so that it now includes students from various ethnic backgrounds, but it still serves one of its main purposes –to be a source or encouragement and inspiration.

NCE continues the tradition of Northwestern's premier gospel choir. Throughout the academic year, the ensemble performs at various churches and public venues and holds two annual concerts. NCE's winter concert has become a celebration of the ensemble's first public debut concert called "An Evening of Music" on December 10, 1971 in Alice Millar Chapel. Each winter concert features a guest artist. NCE is dedicated to minister through song to strengthen, uplift, and encourage the members of Northwestern's community and surrounding areas.

There are 48 members committed to this weekend's concert.
