Some Arlington Heights wading pools still closed

Some pools in suburban Arlington Heights remain closed Monday because of a national recall of pool grates.

While most of the pools at park districts opened over the weekend, officials decided to keep the wading pools at five facilities closed until further notice.

Elk Grove Park District officials say they are in contact with the manufacturer of the pool grates, but they do not know when they will get a replacement or retrofit.

People can reportedly feel a vacuum effect in drains with improper grates, and it can create enough suction to trap swimmers, especially children, at the bottom of a pool.

Most of the drain covers were installed as part of a new law designed to promote drain safety.
