Catholic Charities suspends adoption program after civil unions

Catholic Charities of Peoria and Joliet says the legalization of legal unions in Illinois is a problem for their adoptive and foster parent programs.

The agency is temporarily not licensing families who applied to participate.

The CEO of Catholic Charities of Peoria says the suspension is temporary.

Granting licenses could resume if language is added to the civil union law allowing religious agencies to refer couples to other agencies if the agencies' criteria are not met.

The state is looking at the legal and logistical issues involved following this announcement.
