CHA residents seek blocking of drug testing

June 10, 2011 (CHICAGO)

They delivered letters to the HUD office in the Loop Friday morning.

The group says drug testing would be discriminatory and a violation of their civil rights.

The deputy regional administrator for HUD said she would review the letters and arrange a meeting to discuss the group's concerns.

One woman suggested the money used for drug testing might be spent on other projects.

"There are no social programs for the children. No outlets for them," said CHA resident Seandra Brown. "This money could be used toward those things."

"These rules should not fluctuate or change at the whims of different people," said CHA resident Minnie Jefferson.

The CHA said this policy is intended to make housing better and safer for all residents.
