Mom accepts fatally shot son's high school diploma

June 12, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Angel Brown thanked the staff of Manley Career Academy during Sunday's graduation. Her son Isaiah Carter was shot last November at Parkside and Madison on Chicago's West Side.

Brown says her son was walking home from his grandparents' house at the time. He died from his injuries two weeks later.

Before the ceremony, Brown said it was a "big deal" to receive her son's diploma. "After I receive my son's diploma, I know that we're going out to the graveyard and see him. We'll be given balloons out. And I know that Isaiah going to be smiling down because this was initially his spotlight day. So I know that he'll be smiling down," she said.

Police have not made any arrests in Carter's death. His mother says he had talked about attending culinary school.
